Today is a great day! It's #friyay 🎉 but seriously who'm I kidding it's always the weekend for me 😂. Stay-at-home Mommy style!
So I have a truth I need to share with you all... I co-sleep! I KNOW! 😶 Terrible, right?! Co-sleeping gets a lot of negativity from the parenting world, mainly because doctors and nurses all warn of the increased chance of SIDs associated with it. So that's typically enough to scare any cautious person away from it. However, there are a lot of people who swear by its benefits, such as increasing the bond between baby and mommy, and giving parents a chance to get more sleep because those middle-of-the-night feeds get a heck of a lot easier.
The reason I do it is when my son was a newborn he would only sleep for about 45 minutes in his bassinet before waking up crying. But if I fell asleep with him on my chest and in my arms we could both sleep for 2-3, sometimes even 4 hours! That's a lot of sleep for a new mom (and a new baby)! Thus began the co-sleeping chapter of our lives. We started out sleeping in the living room on the couch (I have quite a big, comfy couch) but after a couple months my back was killing me so we took over my queen-sized bed. Unfortunately for my hubby, this meant he was exiled to the living room because our bed isn't quite big enough for the 3 of us to sleep comfortably.
Now my son is 13 weeks old (almost 3 months!) and he sleeps for about 6-8 hour stretches with me in the bed. YAY! I know I need to start putting him down in his crib so my better half and I can start sleeping together again. It's so important for us to have some mommy/daddy time to keep our bond strong, then we can be better parents as a result. It's been literally months since we had good cuddles, especially considering the last trimester of my pregnancy was consistent with uncomfortable sleeps and little to no cudz.
So let's talk about the crib attempts: when I put Maverick down in his own bed he typically sleeps for about 2 hours, then he wakes up in the middle of the night and I feed him, burp him, change him (if his diaper is dirty) and rock him. Once he falls back asleep I pop him back in his crib... then ten minutes later he wakes up crying again. This is a bit hard for me because at this point I'm so tired I just say screw it and let him fall asleep in my arms and we sleep together. This results in a perfectly sound sleep all the way until late morning, usually until 8:30 or 9 a.m.
I've read all the books and blogs about sleep training, and I know my boo's pretty young to have a perfect 8 hours of sleep without waking up, but I really need to stay consistent and strict (with myself) to keep putting him back in his crib. The sooner I do it the better, because that way he'll get used to his crib and have better sleeps away from mommy. I have a hard time with this because, can I let you in on a little secret... I honestly love co-sleeping! My baby is the cutest little cuddle bug and we sleep sooo well together!
So I'm a little reluctant to admit that this chapter needs to come to a close, but it'll help things get back to normal with hubby and help Mavi feel secure in his own bed.
What do you think about co-sleeping? Do you have any tips to share that will help me put Maverick to sleep on his own? Thank you for reading my blog and look forward to my next post! Happy Friday! 😊
